Lydie Polfer is one of the leading female figures on the political scene, and more specifically in the Liberal Party (DP), which she chaired between 1994 and 2004. Trained as a lawyer, she embarked on a political career at an early age, both at national, European and local level. In June 1979, Lydie Polfer was elected for the 1st time to the Luxembourg Parliament, making her the youngest ever deputy. She sat in the Chamber of Deputies from 1979 to 1985, from 1989 to 1990 and from 1994 to 1999. From 1985 to 1989, from 1990 to 1994 and from 2004 to 2009, she was a member of the European Parliament. From 1999 to 2004, she was Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for the Civil Service in the Juncker-Polfer government. From 2009 to 2013 she was Vice-President of the Chamber of Deputies and re-elected to the Luxembourg Parliament in October 2013, 2018 and 2023. Mayor of the City of Luxembourg from 1982 to 1999 and alderman for culture from 2008 to 2013, Lydie Polfer was once again sworn in as mayor following the early national elections of 20.10.2013 and the municipal elections of 8.10.2017 and 11.06.2023.
